Clinical Trials

Defibrillators in Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathy Treatment Evaluation (DEFINITE)
Principal Investigator: Stephen Winters, MD
Research Coordinator: Arlene Regan, RN
Site: Morristown Memorial Hospital

This randomized study of patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and ventricular ectopy designed to determine if there is any improvement in the length and quality of life between two treatment groups. The first group of patients will receive standard medical management and the second group will receive medical treatment and an implantable cardioverter/defibrillator.
Clinical Protocol for a Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial Evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of Eplerenone in Heart Failure following Acute Myocardial Infarction (EPHESUS)
Principal Investigator: John S. Banas, MD
Research Coordinator: Rose Lao, RN
Site: Morristown Memorial Hospital

The objective of this trial is to compare the effect of a new medication (eplerenone) plus standard therapy versus standard therapy alone on survival rates for patients who experience heart failure in the immediate (3-28 day) post myocardial infarction period.
Candesartan Cilexetil in Heart Failure: Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and Morbidity (CHARM)
Principal Investigator: John S. Banas, MD
Research Coordinator: Arlene Regan, RN
Site: Morristown Memorial Hospital

This is a randomized study for patients with Congestive Heart Failure, who still maintain relatively normal left ventricular function and are unable to take angiotension receptor blockers (ACE).
Bridge to ICD in Patients at Risk of Sudden Arrhythmic Death (BIROAD)
Principal Investigator: Stephen Winters, MD
Research Coordinator: Bobbi Orzepowski, RN
Site: Morristown Memorial Hospital

The objective of this study is to determine if a wearable (vest) cardioverter defibrillator device can detect and treat lethal arrhythmias in post-MI and post-CABG patients who are at risk for sudden death.
Saphenous Vein Graft Intervention Using AngioGuard(tm) for Reduction of Distal Embolization (GUARD)
Principal Investigator: Barry Cohen, MD
Research Coordinator: Rose Lao, RN
Site: Morristown Memorial Hospital

This study is testing a new filter device that may improve the safety of percutaneous coronary angioplasty (PTCA) /stent procedures involving vein grafts.

A Breath Test for Heart Transplant Rejection
Principal Investigator: Mark Jay Zucker, M.D., Newark Beth Israel Hospital
Research Coordinator: Tony Martin, RN.

This NIH sponsored trial is designed to determine if allograft rejection can be identified by analyzing the volatile organic compounds in the breath of heart transplant recipients.
A Multicenter, Randomized, Placebo Controlled Trial of Simulect in De Novo Heart Transplant Recipients Treated in Combination with Neoral, Cellcept and Steroids for the Prevention of Acute Rejection
Principal Investigator: Mark Jay Zucker, Newark Beth Israel Hospital
Research Coordinator: Sandi Aballo, BSN

This trial was designed to see if the frequency of allograft rejection can be decreased if heart transplant recipients are treated with an antibody against the interleukin 2 receptor.
Inhaled Nitric Oxide for Right Heart Failure and/or Pulmonary Hypertension during Heart Transplantation or Left Ventricular Assist Device Insertion
Principal Investigator: Mark Jay Zucker, M.D., Newark Beth Israel Hospital
Research Coordinator: Elaine Giardino, NP

Pulmonary hypertension is a well recognized sequelae of longstanding left heart failure. The presence of pulmonary hypertension increases post heart transplant and left ventricular assist device morbidity and mortality. This trial is designed to assess the ability of inhaled nitric oxide to reduce pulmonary pressures without causing systemic hypotension.
A Multicenter Randomized Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Muromonab-CD3, Cyclosporin and Prednisone in Subjects with Giant Cell Myocarditis
Principal Investigator: Luis Arroyo, M.D., Newark Beth Israel Hospital
Research Coordinator: Sandi Aballo, BSN

Giant cell myocarditis is generally a fatal disease. It presents with heart failure and arrhythmias. The diagnosis is made by endomyocardial biopsy. The only effective treatment is heart transplantation. This trial is designed to test the hypothesis that antibodies against t-cells can alter the natural history of the disease.
Prevention of Bone Loss and Fracture after Organ Transplantation
Principal Investigator: Mark Jay Zucker, M.D., Newark Beth Israel Hospital
Research Coordinator: Susan Pardi, NP

This NIH sponsored trial randomizes patients to various anti-osteoporosis therapies to see if post-transplant osteoporosis and fractures can be reduced.
